Film as Literature

This class will approach film as the subject of literary study, but that’s a complicated task. In doing so, we will take every aspect of film — the cinematography, the script, the acting, the directing, the score — as an element for artistic evaluation. Artifacts normally studied as “literature” like novels, plays, poems, and short stories usually have a single author and a single medium (the printed page). Film, obviously, is a whole other story, but we’ll be learning and using the language of film criticism as it applies to the much older tradition of literary criticism.
